Accident review in Down Beat
Posted: August 15th, 2008

The Anderskov Accident album NEWSPEAK receives 4 out of 5 stars in Down Beat Magazine in the September 2008 issue.
The review states a.o.:
"Keyboardist Jacob Anderskov has almost nonchalantly displayed a dizzying range and curiosity on more than a dozen records cut under his leadership.
Newspeak is the third album credited to his group Anderskov Accident, a wild and woolly octet that attacks his knotty and moody compositions with an appealing loose feel. Within his tunes one can detect a grocery list of ingredients - music from Africa and the Balkans, postbop, dirge - but under his assured leadership the end result never sounds like a hodgepodge.
While the solid tunes are beguiling, equally important to the music's effectiveness is the way the arrangements priviledge ensemble sound. The superb group, including tenor saxophonist Ned Ferm, trombonist Peter Dahlgren and alto saxophonist Jesper Zeuthen, contribute ripping solos, but like a growing number of bandleaders, Anderskov makes sure they don't arrive as isolated packages of information. Each improvisation is deeply connected to every tune, bursting out of the arrangement like a seeking tendril, so that the band doesn't just sit back while one person blows. They are all plucked in all of the time. While the sound is dense, the leader makes good use of dynamics, with a naturalistic ebb and flow that makes those arrangements practically invisible. Watch out for this guy." - Peter Margasak, Down Beat, September 2008.

Reviews from DK, US, Pl.
Posted: July 3rd, 2008

3 new reviews of the latest albums, from magazines in Denmark, USA, Poland:

"With over a dozen CDs as leader since his 2001 debut, Danish pianist Jacob Anderskov is a celebrated name in his home country. But he is patiently working his way - much like the form his music takes - into widespread jazz consciousness, particularly here in the States. Amorphous, introspective - almost meditative - pieces slowly blossom into respective wholes and in whatever context he’s heard, two things remain constant: fluidity and originality.
One of the pianist’s primary musical outlets is his Anderskov Accident group. Their latest, Newspeak, is an octet - three reeds, two brass, piano, bass and drums that work as one, though are also strong individualists; tenor saxist Ned Ferm and trombonist Peter Dahlgren, trumpeter Kasper Tranberg and bass clarinetist Anders Banke all shine. Gorgeous Gil Evans-esque trombone-based brass contrasted by floating reed harmonies are paced by bass and drum-led march figures (“Lisbutin e Mirkola”, “Se Nu Stiger Solen” and “Salene”). This is most definitely a band record and that’s no accident." - Laurence Donohue-Greene, ALL ABOUT JAZZ NYC, July 2008.

Polish magazine Jazzforum gives Accident's Newspeak album the "Rewelecja" stamp in their June 2008 issue.

[The Danish reveiw below states a.o. that "Anderskov is something as rare as a musical seismograph on Danish soil, and is as such invaluable, capacious and engaging."]

Run off groove review
Posted: June 30th, 2008

"The name [Accident] conjures up chaos and disorder, and in fact "The Fourth K" opens up in just that fashion, bringing to mind the collision of sound one might hear on Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz or John Coltrane's Meditations, but when "Lisbutin E Morkola" starts, almost as if you're entering a funeral service, you begin to sense that these guys are going to do things differently. The album seems to be based on the headlines found in today's newspapers, there's a tone to this that is almost unsettling but that is a reflection of an unsettling world. It sounds more like a workshop than a group of musicians, think back to Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra where every sound and burst of energy turns into a specific statement, or helps stir up an emotion in you that is very much of the now. In other words, hearing this makes you feel as if they understand what's going on in the world's confusion, and if you had a way you'd join them in their workshop.
Newspeak says a lot without saying a word, it's one of those albums that would work perfectly live and I hope this album as a whole will be ranked up there with some of Charles Mingus' and Pharoah Sanders' classics." - http://therunoffgroove.blogspot.com/2008/06/run-off-groove-207.html

Panta Rhei - Review in Jazz Podium
Posted: April 8th, 2008

"Masterpiece" ... "Rarely does one meet such an assembly of virtuosity, emotionalty, versatily of expression as by Anderskov"... "extraordinarily creative" ...

Everything is Babel
Posted: March 1st, 2008

Panta Rhei (everything is flux) now received reviews in languages as diverse as Swedish, Polish, Greek, Italian, German, Danish and English. For obvious reasons I dont understand all of it. If anyone out there masters all these languages simultaneously, we could translate the whole thing a lot of ways...

Geiger review of Panta Rhei (Danish only)
Posted: February 3rd, 2008

JACOB ANDERSKOV SOLO @ Copenhagen Jazzhouse, Søndag d. 27.januar kl 20.30
Posted: January 25th, 2008

JACOB ANDERSKOV SOLO @ Copenhagen Jazzhouse, Søndag d. 27.januar kl 20.30 - kun eet sæt - dobbeltkoncert med Little Red Suitcase.

Gaffa on Panta Rhei
Posted: November 12th, 2007

-Ivan Rod, Gaffa.dk, 5/11-2007.

reviews of paa dansk
Posted: March 28th, 2007

New reviews of Jacob Anderskov på dansk.
Cadence Magazine (USA) states a.o.:
"Danish pianist Jacob Anderskov’s playing comes across to me as a quiet celebration, even in passages of high density or volume. His virtuosity is never in question, and his conception of note and chord relations is deliciously complex. Yet, every note is meditative, seemingly born of long introspection.
His warm tones and effortless chromaticism conjure shades of Messiaen and Cage in ways that only Richard Grossman’s pianism has done previously.
He is aided throughout the disc by some top-flight playing, sensitive and skilled in equal measure and when appropriate. Swells and fades are group efforts, the sense of ensemble interplay pervasive throughout, no mean feat in the larger group tracks.
The two-drum lineup is especially well conceived, and the music blends freedom and tradition in a manner that is often revelatory. Experienced lovers of new-thing mayhem will hear instrumental relationships anew while power and energy still abound. Connoisseurs of the piano should also take note, as this is one of the most original voices I’ve heard on the instrument in some time. " - Marc Medwin, Cadence Magazine, March 2007.
